Hello from Gloucester, UK. Yellow LD1B 3L Lupo
Hello!
I've just bought an April 2001 built Yellow (LD1B) 3L Lupo from Stuttgart, Germany.
The journey was 'interesting' to say the least and took place over 2 days.
It's 1100km from my home to Stuttgart. I set off at around 6am on Saturday morning and headed for the Euro Tunnel.
The News came on at 7am 'The Euro Tunnel is currently closed due to almost 200 immigrants invading the French terminal last night, Services will be delayed...' Oh great!
As it turned out, my 11:20am Train was delayed until 13:50 so I arrived in Calais after 3pm European time.
I now had an 8 hour drive to Stuttgart!
After one stop and around 5 Poirot stories... I arrived at the address in Stuttgart at 22:50 only to find that the seller (Young 20s called Alex, selling on behalf of his girlfriend) was not ready and had gone back into central Stuttgart to get keys, paperwork etc. After several annoyed phone calls later (at 1am!!!) he turned up.
I inspected the car. Found several things wrong with the car (which the seller had not informed me about previously) and we ended up at a Price of €750. This did take around 25 minutes of arguing on the street at 01:30am!!
I strapped the car onto the Trailer and headed off to find somewhere to park up and slept in the back of the Tiguan for a few hours.
The car didn't come with the correct wheels but I had managed to find a set only 50 kms away and bought those at 9am before Setting off back to Calais.
Lots more Poirot later, I arrived at the Euro Tunnel at around 18:30 and then home by 23:00 ready to unload and go to bed!
So the Problems on the car...
It would not always actuate the clutch. That is to say, sometimes you would start the car, put the car into gear and nothing would happen. The gearbox has recently had a lot of work but not by a VW 3L specialist and the clutch Solenoid was not set up properly.
Selecting reverse would only work (when you got it to drive) by moving very swiftly from D to Reverse. A resounding 'clunk' and reverse would work. Just trying to select reverse in a normal way would not work.
I spent a couple of hours last night going through the Basic Settings and now the clutch is happy, the gears all work so I'm much happier
However, a few of you may have noticed some rust... yes RUST! on the left rear sill. I think that the car must have had an accident and the sill has been repaired. The rest of the car is without rust. So I must do some welding!
Also... in the process of swapping the wheels over, I discovered that the rear Brakes are binding. The handbrake cables are seized as are the rear wheel cylinders. I have ordered replacements from VW and they will arrive on Saturday morning.
There are other parts that have been damaged and cable-tied back together so I have many things to do to the car... but it was cheap

Welcome!
What are the odds? Two people from the UK registering on the same day.
Same question here, are you gonna be the first to built a RHD Lupo 3L?

Helaas geen Lupo meer in bezit, wel een mooie Polo Bluemotion 1.2 TDI voor de deur!

RHD? I'm not sure that it is worth it.
I haven't looked into if it's possible yet but the number of one-off parts used within the 3L would make it a real headache.
Most of my vehicles are LHD so I'm happy to drive it that way.

Re: Hello from Gloucester, UK. Yellow LD1B 3L Lupo
Well the 3L now has an MOT.
I've had the paperwork returned to me once already by DVLA as they need a certificate of conformity to prove the emissions. Yes I am trying to get free road tax!!
On other news, I picked these up today
Now I just need to work out the wiring.
They were cheap as one of them is missing some fixings and I think that the bulb is blown.
Has anyone else here fitted GTi HID headlights to their 3L?

Re: Hello from Gloucester, UK. Yellow LD1B 3L Lupo
Well... 6 weeks later (yes really!), I have a Uk registered Lupo 3L
Now that I can drive it... there are a few things to sort out!
50 miles into the journey, the accelerator stopped working and it lost drive! I pulled over, logged into the Auto trans ECU found a speed sensor fault.
I cleared the fault, turned off the ignition and restarted it... fault cleared and I carried on. It didn't occur again but I'll change the sensor.
The next is with the stop-start. Once stopped and foot on the brake pedal for more than 3 seconds, the engine turns off... but it doesn't restart every time! Sometimes it starts, the rest of the time it engages the startermotor but only for 1/2 a second and then stops. There are no faults. I wonder if this fault is also attached to the fact that i can't start the engine with the gearlever in 'STOP' position. It has to be in 'N'.
Any ideas please?
The wipers don't work on intermittent, I think that it needs a relay (which I have) so I'll swap that. Has anyone fitted to Skoda adjustable intermittent relay?
Drivers door check strap, I've replaced the bolt but there is still a lot of play in the connection. I presume that I have to change the bar itself?
I've managed to get 3.5L/100km so far. This has been at 100kph.

The startstop problem you have, we are all to familiar sith that problem: its the "geleidebus" of your clutch that is probably broken, and must be replaced. The part only costs 5 euro, but you"ll have to take alart the whole clutch. Soon youll be getting more shifting and starting problems

Do you have a part number for this part please?
It always starts with the ignition key, this is not a problem.

Re: Hello from Gloucester, UK. Yellow LD1B 3L Lupo
The clutch moves over this tube
Problem is that the tube is made from steel that is not that tough, and with the eco system on, the clutch moges over this tube and back again every time that you let go of the gas pedal. The material breaks . And little chunks of geleidebus fall of. Most of the geleidebus's are totally ruined. Problem is that the clutch alignement is affected by this, and all the clutch values have to be perfect in order for the startstop system to restart correctly after a stop. We also often see that because of this problem, a lupo cannot be started from the stop position; these lupos can often only be starten with the gearknob in N position, thats often an early indicator of a failing geleidebus

Your best bet is to buy a new bar but a cheaper one is to take one of a breakers passenger door side. L + R are identical but is mounted mirrored.

I also had an variable adjustable relays fitted in my Lupo. Was it number 99? I don't remember it anymore.
You needed the handle to turn-on -off and -on again to set the time.

Re: Hello from Gloucester, UK. Yellow LD1B 3L Lupo
Thank you for the info.
I have fitted that relay to my other vehicles so I am used to how it works. I must admit, I had a quick look and couldn't find the relay so I presumed that I was going to have to dismantle half of the dashboard to get to it!
I have to change the clock-ring for the steering wheel also as the airbag light is on.
I will do both at the same time.
I will not be pulling the gearbox out just yet... I've only been able to drive the car for a couple of days so far after having it in the country for over 2 months! I need to use it for a bit first.
I could do with a rear seat that splits as I have a baby seat in for my son.
